Clean transport zones 2026: Warsaw and Krakow

Advice
12.03.2026

Table of article contents

Clean transport zones in Warsaw in 2026 is a topic that arouses emotions among drivers, residents and people planning trips to this city. The regulations in force in Krakow since 2024 and planned in Warsaw significantly limit the possibility of driving vehicles with high exhaust emissions. From January 2026, there will be another phase of stricter standards, which will cover a much wider range of cars registered in Poland. In this article, we discuss which cars will be allowed to enter the CTE Krakow 2026 and CTE Warsaw 2026, as well as how to plan a trip to the centre of these cities if your vehicle does not meet the requirements.

Clean transport zone in Krakow in 2026 – what is changing?

The clean transport zone in Krakow in 2026 will be one of the most restrictive in Poland. From 1 January, only cars that meet specific emission standards will be allowed to enter:

    • petrol: minimum Euro 3 (cars manufactured after 2000),
    • diesel: minimum Euro 5 (cars manufactured after 2010).

This means that many older models, especially diesel-powered vehicles, will be banned from entering the SCT. The zone covers a significant part of the city – mainly the centre, Kazimierz and Stare Podgórze – and will be enforced by a number plate monitoring system. Temporary exemptions are provided for residents, but only until 2028. Visitors whose cars do not meet the standards will be forced to park outside the zone or change their means of transport.

Clean transport zone in Warsaw in 2026 – second phase of implementation

The clean transport zone in Warsaw entered its next phase of development in 2026. The capital began implementing the CTZ in 2024, covering the city centre – Śródmieście and parts of neighbouring districts. From January 2026, the next stage came into force:

    • petrol: minimum Euro 4 (cars manufactured after 2005),
    • diesel: minimum Euro 5 (cars manufactured after 2010).

The territorial scope of the SCT has been expanded to include parts of Ochota, Praga and Mokotów, among others. SCT 2026 Warsaw Krakow are therefore two independent but similar zones, whose aim is to improve air quality and reduce emissions from road transport. Entering the zone in a vehicle that does not meet the requirements will result in a fine – the system verifies data from the CEPiK (Central Register of Vehicles and Drivers) and there is no need for a patrol to stop the car.

What vehicles will be permitted to enter SCT Warsaw and Kraków 2026?

What vehicles will be permitted to enter SCT Kraków and Warsaw in 2026?

    • Electric cars, plug-in hybrids and LPG/CNG-powered cars (with appropriate Euro standards) – yes.
    • petrol cars with Euro 3 (Krakow) or Euro 4 (Warsaw) standards – yes,
    • Diesel engines below Euro 5 – no.

If in doubt, you can use municipal online search engines that check compliance with SCT regulations based on the registration number. It is also worth remembering that it is not enough to have emission standards on paper – the data reported to CEPiK is decisive. A car that has not been registered with the appropriate code may be incorrectly considered non-compliant.

What should you do if your car does not meet SCT standards?

For those who do not wish to replace their vehicle, there are several practical solutions. The most convenient of these is short-term car rental that meets all SCT requirements. With just a few clicks, you can book a modern petrol, hybrid or electric car for a few days or weeks – ideal if you are planning a visit to the city centre, a business meeting or a family gathering. Our car rental company offers compact cars and SUVs that meet the highest emission standards. You can also opt for long-term car rental if you plan to visit Warsaw or Krakow regularly and do not want to incur the cost of buying a new car.

Summary – SCT 2026 is not the end of mobility, but a new set of rules

Clean transport zones 2026: Warsaw and Krakow are a step towards improving air quality, but also a real challenge for owners of older vehicles. The introduction of restrictive emission standards means that cars must be checked before each visit to the centre of these cities. For drivers whose cars do not meet the required standards, car rental remains a good solution. This allows them to continue to drive in the zones in accordance with the regulations, without the risk of a fine and without having to purchase a new vehicle. A conscious approach to change is key – SCTs do not close roads, but introduce more responsible mobility rules in cities.

FAQ – Clean Transport Zones 2026: Warsaw and Krakow

Do I need a special sticker on my windscreen to enter the SCT?

No. The system is based on reading number plates and verifying data from the CEPiK (Central Register of Vehicles and Drivers). There is no need to place physical markings on the car.

Can LPG cars enter the clean transport zone?

Yes, provided they meet the required Euro standard (minimum Euro 3 or 4 depending on the city).

What are the consequences of entering the SCT with an unauthorised vehicle?

The driver may be fined – the amount is determined based on local regulations. The system operates automatically, and the check is carried out without stopping the vehicle.

Can I hire an SCT-compliant car for just one day?

Yes – short-term car hire allows for flexible bookings.

Is long-term car hire a good option for residents of the zone?

Definitely – it is a convenient and financially predictable solution, especially if you are not planning to invest in your own new car.
